Oral health supplements: an evidence-aware buying guide

Supplements can be marketed for gums, breath, teeth or the oral microbiome, but the strength of evidence differs by ingredient, product and outcome.

Five questions to ask before buying

  1. What outcome is being claimed? “Supports oral wellness” is not the same as “treats periodontal disease.”
  2. Is the evidence on the finished product? Ingredient studies do not automatically validate a blend.
  3. Does the studied dose and delivery form match? Gum, lozenges, tablets and rinses expose the mouth differently.
  4. Could the symptom need diagnosis? Bleeding gums, swelling, persistent pain, loose teeth or persistent dry mouth deserve professional assessment.
  5. Are interactions or contraindications relevant? Check the label and seek professional guidance when needed.
